Rugby Football Union (RFU)

Rugby Football Union logoWe have previously acted as Technical Advisors for the Rugby Football Union (RFU) working within their Community Club Development Project (CCDP). This is a national grass roots development programme involving the allocation of £1.2 million of funding throughout the country. During the year, a number of sites specified by the RFU, situated across the whole of England, are assessed and reported on.

Reports include information such as:

  • Surface Assessment to Performance Qualification Standards
  • Ground Infrastructure Assessment
  • Groundstaff Appraisal
  • Maintenance Specifications
  • Interpretation of Soil Test
  • Detailed Annual Maintenance Programmes
  • Recommendations with industry prices

Subsequent to these reports, the TTS team designed specifications and acted in the procurement of Contractors/Suppliers.

"TTS were engaged to act as expert consultants on over 50 pitch improvement projects as part of the RFU's Community Club Development programme. The standard of consultancy and procurement of local contractors has been very high, and has for the first time lead to a traceable list of contractors who have performed to the standards required."

Simon Winman, Funding & Facilities Manager.

England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB)

English Cricket Board (ECB) logoTTS work closely with the England & Wales Cricket Board. Working together we aim to provide all groundsman with the technical advice they require to manage and maintain their playing surface.

"My role at the ECB is dedicated to raising the standard of pitches across the UK. Not since the invention of the lawnmower have we lived in an age of technological and educational advances in sports turf management as we do today.

Cricket in particular requires unique demands of the playing surface. Whether it's a new construction or restoring an existing facility, confidence is essential towards ensuring and deploying the most cost effective advice and high standards achievable.

I have the confidence in the personnel and ability of TTS to meet such needs."

Chris Woods, ECB Pitch Consultant.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club

Leicestershire County Cricket Club logoTTS undertook end of season renovation work on the main square at Leicestershire County Cricket Club in 2004. Using the Koro Field 'Top-Maker' and Graden tractor mounted scarifier, surface levels were rectified to prevent surface ponding and organic matter was removed from the square.

"I discussed with David Bates of TTS, the issues I had with the square and the results I would like to see achieved. TTS provided the specifications and the project was completed, with our own groundstaff working along side the contractors, in a very efficient and timely manner.

Surface ponding was alleviated and also the removal of thatch has given me a clean playing surface. The equipment and machinery was used to great effect, with minimum disruption, and I am now extremely pleased with the square. The grass coverage has returned and I am delighted by the result."

Andrew Whiteman, Head Groundsman at Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

Royal Hospital School, Ipswich

The Royal Hospital logoTTS completed a full design build for the reconstruction of the main square.

"The Royal Hospital School First XI cricket square was completely stripped and re-laid in October 2003 under the expert management of David Bates, Director of Total Turf Solutions Ltd. From initial discussions through to 'ready for use', David has provided extremely professional, understandable and enthusiastic advice and guidance.

The carefully drawn up specifications, quality of workmanship during the construction process and the attentive after care have been instrumental in providing what promises to be a first class playing surface for the school. We look forward to many years of quality use both for ourselves and prospective lettings clients and we have great expectations for significant improvements in the standards achieved by the schools cricket team."

Pavenham Cricket Club

Pavenham Cricket Club logo‘We asked David Bates of TTS to look into the problems that we were having with our square, via the area cricket league. The initial report was not very complimentary and a number of issues needed to be addressed. David outlined, in a very comprehensive manner, the work that was required to bring the square up to standard. We then committed ourselves to some autumn renovation work and the pitch improved 100%. Two years on, thanks to David and his team, the pitch is un-recognisable and is now a pleasure to play on.’

Brian Howkins, Honorary Secretary of Pavenham Cricket Club
