The playing characteristics of any pitch can be predicted without watching a ball being bowled. Understanding pitch profiles (core), loams and pitch preparation are all key to producing good surfaces. The ‘core’ provides us with vital information.

Scarification

The removal of organic matter or thatch is one of the most important tasks in the production of a good cricket surface.
As part of the end of season renovation work every effort should be taken to clean the surface, increase grass coverage and improve surface levels.
